Definition. Special event insurance is short-term liability (and optional cancellation) coverage for a specific one-time or occasional event — a wedding, festival, conference, or fundraiser — protecting the host against bodily injury or property-damage claims arising from the event.
Also known as:
event liability insurance, one-day event insurance, wedding insurance
Special event insurance is a short-duration policy covering the liability exposures of a single event rather than an ongoing business. It responds to third-party bodily injury or property damage claims arising out of the event — a guest injury, damage to the rented venue — much like a one-day version of general liability.
Venues almost always require it and require to be named as an additional insured on the policy, evidenced by a certificate of insurance. Where alcohol is served, host liquor liability is typically added or required, since standard event liability may exclude alcohol-related claims.
Optional event cancellation coverage is a separate insuring agreement that reimburses non-recoverable deposits and costs if the event must be cancelled or postponed for covered reasons (severe weather, venue closure, vendor failure). Limits and cost scale with attendance, venue requirements, alcohol, and whether cancellation cover is included.
Example
A couple rents a barn venue for a 150-guest wedding. The venue requires a $1M special event liability policy naming it as additional insured, plus host liquor liability because a bartender will serve alcohol. The one-day policy costs about $185.
